What is mutual aid?
Under capitalism the act of taking care of one another is a political one. Instead of waiting for governments and institutions to address our needs, through mutual aid we are choosing to subvert the system and take care of one another without having to rely on getting permission from bureaucratic systems.
"Mutual aid is when everyday people get together to meet each other’s needs, with the shared understanding that the systems we live in are not meeting our needs and that we can meet them together, right now, without having to pressure power structures to do the right thing." - Joel Izlar
What separates mutual aid from charity is that mutual aid is designed and run by working class people who also benefit from mutual aid. Sunrise Dartmouth is lead by working class people who have benefited from our mutual aid network, and as a result we have a deep understanding of what needs Dartmouth often fails to address and are working to address these needs ourself.
